Dlaczego "Radio Café"?

Otóż nasza restauracja nie tylko podaje smaczne posiłki i doskonałe desery od 7.30 rano do 23.00 wieczorem. Jest ona również siedzibą Klubu Stowarzyszenia Pracowników Radia Wolna Europa.

Jak, niestety, wielu z nas pamięta, w ciemnych latach komunizmu RWE była dla milionów Polaków jedynym „oknem” na świat. Wielu w latach 50-tych ryzykowało 10 letnie wyroki sądowe za przykładanie ucha do odbiorników, aby usłyszeć, co naprawdę działo się poza żelazną kurtyną.

Polska sekcja radia powstała 3 maja 1952 roku i miała siedzibę w Monachium. Pracowałem tam w latach 1955/56.
Po upadku komunizmu w Polsce sekcja została zamknięta.

Pierwszym sekretarzem Wykonawczym Stowarzyszenia Pracowników Radia Wolna Europa była śp Pani Alina Grabowska-Perth, długoletnia komentatorka i dziennikarka RWE w Monachium. Prezesem honorowym był, do swej śmierci w 2005 roku, Pan Jan Nowak Jeziorański, legendarny Kurier z Warszawy, pierwszy i wieloletni Dyrektor Rozgłośni Polskiej Radia Wolnej Europy.

Pourquoi "Radio Café"?

J’espère que mon restaurant vous plaît, que vous vous y sentez un peu comme “chez vous”.

Il est sûrement sous l’influence des bistros parisiens traditionnels mais ce restaurant est aussi le Club des Anciens Employés de la Radio de l’Europe Libre à Munich.

Cette station de radio, fondée par le gouvernement américain sous la présidence d’Eisenhower, a commencé à diffuser, le 3 mai 1952, des informations du monde libre vers la Pologne (qui se trouvait alors derrière le rideau de fer). Aussitôt, pour les gouvernements communistes des pays de l’Est, la radio devint l’ennemi numéro 1 ! Dans la Pologne des années 50, on risquait une peine de 10 ans de prison pour l’avoir écoutée.

Moi-même, j’ai travaillé pour la Radio pendant les années 1955/56.
La Section Polonaise de la Radio de l’Europe Libre fut fermée en 1992, trois ans après que notre pays soit redevenu libre pour la première fois depuis 1939.

Les photos que vous voyez aux murs illustrent l’histoire de la Radio et, pour les plus récentes, celle de l’Association de ses anciens employés.

Why "Radio Café"?

A reasonable question.

Well, our restaurant is not only a place serving delicious (we hope), and reasonably priced meals from 7.30am until 11pm. It is also the Club of former employees of Radio Free Europe in Munich.
In case you are too young to remember, or have been luckily living on the right side of the “Iron Curtain” (right being, of course, left as you look at the map), allow me to explain:

Radio Free Europe was founded in 1952 under the Eisenhower administration which wisely considered, that the word may be as effective or more effective then the arms race.
It became an instant success with listeners in Eastern Europe, eager to hear something besides the local flood of propaganda.
From 1952 until 1956 ten year prison sentences were often imposed on Poles who listened to RFE. I worked for the station in 1955/1956.
The Polish section of the Radio was closed shortly after Poland became independent.

The photos you can see on the walls are mementos of its 50 year history, showing leading personalities of the Polish Section as well as some taken later, after the Club was created in Warsaw in the late 90’s. There are also black and white portraits of the American Directors of the RFE.
